Ben Gilby-Todd Scholarship Fund

The Ben Gilby-Todd Scholarship Fund is administered by Waikato Hockey Charitable Trust, a fully Registered Charitable Trust under New Zealand Law.

The Trust has a primary function of providing assistance to Waikato players under the age of 22 who:

Show exceptional skill in their sport and are chosen to represent their province;
Show a willingness to achieve academically;
Are not in a position to financially participate at representative level sport through financial hardship.

This Trust was initially set up by the Gilby-Todd family in memory of their son, Ben, who died tragically on 8th October 2009. Ben was a major supporter, player and advocate for hockey and especially in the promotion of younger players. He represented hockey at various levels both here and in the United Kingdom.

Donations to the Ben Gilby-Todd Scholarship Fund enable us to offer additional funds to Waikato hockey players who show a high level of promise both within the sport of hockey and academically, and through financial hardship cannot further their sporting or academic paths.

Applications:

The Scholarship shall be known as the Ben Gilby-Todd Scholarship Fund and will be available to applicants who have been selected for the Waikato Representative Teams attending National or Regional Tournaments.. Each year notification will be given to the age group eligible to apply for funds from the Ben Gilby-Todd Scholarship Fund for financial assistance.

Application Dates:

U18 National Tournament July 2025: Applications close midday 2 June 2025.
U16 Regional Tournament September 2025: Applications close midday 2 September 2025.
Seniors National (NHC) Tournament September 2025: Applications close midday 2 September 2025.

Along with a completed application form, applicants are to include a personal statement which highlights the student’s eligibility.

Sporting achievements
Personal achievements
2 references (School/Club Hockey Coach and one character reference)
Personal statement of why the applicant believes they should be the beneficiary (no more than 500 words).
Proof of New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency.

The Selection Panel may refrain from making a recommendation if it finds no candidates of sufficient merit.

In exceptional circumstances funds may be shared.
